WHAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED AT COACHELLA
By Keira Llanes
This year’s Coachella was a spectacle for international acts, with Bad Bunny as the first Latino headliner for Coachella and BLACKPINK as the first K-Pop group to headline. Bad Bunny opened Coachella with his catchy, viral hit “Tití Me Preguntó,” leaving a hyped and energetic impression on the crowd. There was one performance, however, which gave many fans a chuckle; a fan tweet was displayed on screen of one of his performances, which appeared to have thrown shade at singer Harry Styles. In his weekend two performance, Bad Bunny followed up with another tweet on screen apologizing to Styles, which read “Sorry Harry, it was a mistake from my team, we love you <3.” Also making history, BLACKPINK asserted their status as K-Pop superstars when they opened with their ear-worm hit “Pink Venom.” The group left a mark on Coachella history, having one of the most viewed livestreams in the festival’s run.
Rosalia also turned heads with her appearance during weekend two, performing her viral song “Bizcochito” that has made its rounds on TikTok. Slated to headline, Frank Ocean had many attendees disappointed, with him performing with an incomplete set during his first day and backing out of his performance last minute on the final day of the festival. An overwhelming amount of online reactions include people criticizing Ocean for having no technical equipment in his first set and for completely scrapping out his performance for day three. However, others have also pointed out that Coachella holds a lot of significance and sentimentality to him, as Ocean used to attend the festival regularly with his brother before he passed away in 2020. So while his decisions to back out led many fans with disappointment, many also understood his rationale behind not following through with his performances. Replacing Ocean’s time slot, Skrillex, Blink-182, Four Tet, and Fred Again took over during the final day. While many fans retaliated and argued that they were not their target audience, many people remained in attendance to enjoy the newly announced performers. With this year’s Coachella honoring such a diverse and talented lineup, it’s safe to say that this year’s festival was a memorable event for many. |
