THE PERFECT SHOW
By Marie Grace Mateo
Continued from Home Page ... pretty difficult. On the other hand, for band instructors, creating six to twelve minute field shows is a big process. Eventually it comes down to the question: How do you create the “perfect” show? Eric Mabery, a band instructor at Olympian High School was a big advocate in answering this question.
The first step to creating a field show, and ultimately the most time consuming step is arranging the music. Mr. Mabery starts this process by listening to an extensive list of songs and then eliminates or combines chosen songs based on which musical pieces go well with each other and which pieces do not. Eventually, after the long process of listening and arranging musical pieces Mr. Mabery is able to narrow that long list of songs into three possible field shows all containing different themes. This year’s field season band members of 2015 and 2016 were given the chance to choose between the themes: Pirates, Rio de Janeiro Carnival, or the broadway show In the Heights. The final result chosen by the members of the band was Rio de Janeiro Carnival.
The second step a band instructor takes after establishing the musical arrangement is determining the formations. Mr. Mabery’s top priority when creating field shows is to give a performance that the audience will enjoy and have fun watching. What comes after is taking consideration of the music and what it represents as well as the mood of the music. Since this arrangement is a Latin themed show that involves authentic Brazilian music Mr. Mabery designed the formations and performance not as a story but as a representation of the history, spirit, and ethnic flavors woven into the music of this year’s Carnival field show.
The third and final step in creating a field show is bringing the band and color guard together and coordinating both the formations and the color guard’s routines into a fiery Latin experience that audiences will enjoy and dance along with the music and performance. The goal of the band and color guard is to create music and movements that they will enjoy performing together as dancers and musicians in order to present to the audience the festive fun, joy, and celebration that can be found during the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Festival. By the experiences and concepts presented by Eric Mabery the “perfect” show can be made by arduously organizing a set of pieces that compliment one another from a long list of songs to a festive set of musical scores, arranging formations that represent the music and entertains the audience, and finally combining the band’s formations with the color guard’s performances to present a show that is not only enjoyable to perform, but is a treat to watch.

SUMMER NIGHTS
|
What’s the deal with Spirit-Week?
|
This year’s Summer Nights took place on September 4, 2015 in kick off to a long Labor Day weekend. All Eagles and guest were invited to this event; the turnout was quite successful. All those in attendance took part in many of the events and showcases that lasted from sunset till dark. Many clubs, teams, and performance groups were represented throughout the event. This was a chance for them to showcase their talents and abilities for friends and fellow students to enjoy.
Summer Nights started off with musical and dance performances by several groups of students. The OHS Cheer team did a small performance followed by several musical performances by Olympian students. Several students did amazing band performances and solos, and some even performed original songs. Later, the girl’s dance team performed and got the crowd into an energetic mood. Besides the performances, many clubs set up activity booths and food stands throughout the basketball courts, which served as a great venue.. Here each club sold a large variety snacks and drinks for the guests to buy, in order to raise money for their cause. The KIWAINIS club, for example, was selling Boba from Lollicup, while the Cross Country team sold donuts. Other clubs including the Animal Rights Club, the M.E.C.H.A. club, and the Christian club had food stands as well. One activity that caught my eye was theOHS Band, who hosted a photo booth for all to use. For a small fee, students were able to “get married” at the booth to whomever they chose! Those who decided to get married under the sunset were given Polaroid pictures of their special occasion. To wrap up the event, the ASB hosted an hour long dance party. The DJ played many popular songs that people of all ages were getting down to! Some students did the Whip, others did the Nae Nae, and plenty took part in the Cha Cha Slide! The night definitely ended with a blast. What a way to Kick the year into gear! |
HOMECOMING: A NIGHT TO REMEMBER
-J.P. Lopez 12th grade
Indeed a night to remember for the Olympian Eagles football team as they took on the Chula Vista Spartans on Homecoming. The game began on the opening kickoff being muffled by the Spartans and recovered by the Eagles, leading Noah Lacsina to a 17 yard rushing touchdown. A slow ending to the first quarter led to high powered offense and defense by the Eagles the rest of the way. With touchdowns coming from Tyson Stevenson, two from Michael Kipling, and a rushing touchdown from quarterback Gary Cannon. The Eagles played well on defense as well forcing multiple fumbles and continued to disrupt the quarterback. The Spartans would eventually get on the board in the fourth quarter, but it was too late as the Eagles took the Homecoming game 33-9.
