Grammy Predictions
By: Frankie Barrios
A couple weeks back the Grammy 2021 nominations were announced and the awards are set to take place on January 31st 2021. Every year when nominations come out the Grammys are known to have a snub or two but this year especially since they completely blocked out artists like The Weeknd, Halsey and many more from any nominations. However there are still plenty of strong contenders and we’ll be predicting the outcome of the general field categories.
BEST NEW ARTIST
Let's start off with the best new artist. This category has some solid nominees but some of the top contenders include Doja Cat, Indrid Andress, Noah Cyrus and Megan Thee Stallion. The best new artist category in particular tends to choose people with great commercial success. That being said I believe this is going to be a close call between Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion. If things keep going the way they have been then Doja Cat might take the win considering she just beat out Megan for AMAS best new artist and she won best new artist at the VMAS as well. SONG OF THE YEAR Song of the year is awarded to the songwriters. The nominees include Black Parade, Circles, Cardigan, Don’t Start Now, Everything I Wanted, I Can’t Breathe and If The World Was Ending. Out of these the 4 I believe have the best chance of winning are Cardigan, Everything I Wanted, If The World Was Ending and I Can’t Breathe since these songs have a combination of great commercial success as well as the songwriting element. |
I Can’t Breathe by H.E.R is the least commercially successful out of these however it has a great chance of winning since it’s message is so powerful covering the Black Lives Matter movement. However Cardigan by Taylor Swift is very storytelling but also has great commercial backing making this song a big contender for this category.
RECORD OF THE YEAR
Record of the year which is different from song of the year because it is more so about the producing and engineering of a song. The nominees include Black Parade by Beyonce, Colors by Black Pumas, Circles by Post Malone, Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, Rockstar by DaBaby feat. Roddy Rich, Say So by Doja Cat, Everything I Wanted by Billie Eilish and Savage by Megan Thee Stallion feat. Beyonce. Say So was one of the biggest songs of the year however it has been nominated for several other awards and has lost and I believe that will happen again. Everything I Wanted was a great song but considering Finneas and Billie won all 4 main categories last year I’m not sure if the Grammys will give them this award back to back. One of my top 2 contenders is Circles by Post Malone since it was a great success this year, Post Malone has been nominated for the main categories 3 years in a row and has yet to win so this might be his year. The song I think might take the win is Don’t Start Now by Dua Lipa, out of her 6 nominations 3 of them are in the main categories and this category is the one she is most likely to win considering it was one of the biggest songs of the year and had a great 80’s disco sound to it. |
