Olympian's very first thrift club
By: Alex Baldemeca
Inspired by Eastlake High School's Thrift Club, junior, Roswel Panelo, decided to create Olympian’s very first Thrift Club. Although the club is new and just starting out, Roswel has been planning its creation for a long time, “I’ve been planning to start the club since my late freshmen year in 2019.” The club helps educate their members on what thrifting is, and how to do it responsibly.
The club cabinet consists of students of the junior class, including: Roswel Panelo as president, Elijah Frijas as vice president, Kennedy Leia as treasurer, and Bill Nolasco as treasurer. Due to the circumstances of distance-learning and COVID-19, the club holds their meetings over Google Meet, and has a google classroom to keep club members updated. In a typical club meeting, they would have someone speaking about a topic revolving around thrifting. They touch on the environmental impacts of thrifting. In the video posted on their Instagram, club president, Roswel, touches on how thrifting can help the environment by preventing clothes from ending up in landfills. In past meetings, they have discussed how to properly manage old clothes or where they can buy new ones. Throughout their meetings they like to include other members in the conversation to keep the meeting positive and inclusive. Before the meeting ends, they discuss their future plans for the next meeting and then dismiss the club members. |
This year, if circumstances lighten up and they can safely do so, they plan to schedule “swap meets and thrift trips” with club members. They are also looking into scheduling these trips with their sister club, Eastlake’s Thrift Club. The club also plans to host clothing drives to donate to stores such as Goodwill, Roswel highlighted that, “These drives are meant to help support the communities that need those thrift stores.”

Vice President, Elijah Frijas, stated, “I joined because I wanted to work together with the same interest in thrifting and to learn more about thrift fashion and better ways to shop.” Joining thrift club gives people an opportunity to express themselves through fashion, in a affordable and responsible way. Another club member, Jessica Rubio, a junior at Olympian, mentioned, “[I] wanted to know more about thrifting and not cause damage to our communities.” While senior, Jared Douglas joined as, “...[he] simply just wanted to start thrifting more.” Thrift Club wants you to “Join thrift club for clothes!” You can find Thrift Club on Instagram @thrift.ohs, to join their google classroom send them a dm for the Google Classroom class code.
