Ms. Salinas' AP Literature class were enduring transformation and embracing their new form. From human to honey badger, anthropoid to ant, person to penguin; the English students were busy writing daily.
In addition to the winter break reading assignment, Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka- a literary work in which a man wakes up to find he has transformed into insect, Ms. Salinas included that each student write ten entries about their own "metamorphosis" into anything nonhuman. The reasoning behind this inventive project was in a rigorous course filled with analysis and objective writing; Salinas wanted "to leave more room for creativity". Seizing this opportunity to spread her creative wings, AP Literature student, and Katherine Gorospe enthusiastically worked on her diary entries. Katherine decided to turn into a killer whale, when asked about her choice she giggled and stated, "I wanted something unexpected". Katherine primary goal was to keep the story light and humorous. When asked about the class, Katherine sincerely replied, "Ms. Salinas's class is a safe environment." Being comfortable and having the freedom to express in this class is the primary reason Katherine was able to convey herself in a herself in a satirical and humorous way. |

Common Senior Experience, ContinuedAs seniors are done reading the book “Thank you for your service,” by David Finkel, they will soon have an option to ask questions for the author himself about the topic on PTSD through a class Skype call in the MPR. The book allows seniors to oversee the lives of several soldiers along with their spouses. The book takes place in the “after war” faced by a group of US soldiers on their return home from the war in Iraq; some are plagued by the effects of Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The MAD concert will allow our senior class to raise funds to support organizations like Freedom Dogs, Semper Fi Fund, and Veteran Village that offer aid to soldiers with PTSD.

into an assignment where you must rely on others for a good grade. Fortunately for his students, Mr. Avason has taken a different approach of creating an essay, presentation, or pop-up booklet and has made it into a learning experience by working together with the English department. The Eagle Times has chosen to interview Mr. Avason for an in-depth view of what this project is all about.
What was your initial when you assigned this project? I wanted you guys to work in groups. Go through the ability of dealing with people, which is communication skills, which is very important in real life. How did you get other teachers from different subjects involved? I talked to Mr. Rodriguez, Mrs. Salinas, and the English department. I also talked to Dr. Fabian, Dra. Walker, and those are the ones that helped me go through this process. What was your favorite part throughout the process of the project? Yes, when you guys were stressed, didn't know how to deal with people, the inability to communicate, the inability to send a email, or respond to one because that's what happens in real life. That's important, how do we deal with it? What's the stress? How do we deal with that, and people don't know at this age. How do you feel your student's reacted to the project? I would say 98% had a good good positive attitude. The other 2%, just because they don't like to do anything and because they didn't get the grade they wanted to therefore they hated the project. Is this something you plan on doing next year? I always do it every year. Is there anything else you want to say? You guys are wonderful people and I love you. |
While not every state holds caucuses, since most have primaries, this caucus held in Iowa at the beginning of the month was very important. This is because more often than not, whoever wins in the early caucuses and primaries usually is picked to be one of the candidates for either the Republican or Democratic party.
For the Republicans, the results caucus was very close. According to official results from the Wall Street Journal, current junior Senator Ted Cruz received 51,666 of the votes while Donald Trump closed in with 45,427 and Senator Marco Rubio was close behind. After this caucus former Governor, Mike Huckabee, Senator Rand Paul, and former Senator and Representative Rick Santorum officially dropped out of the race. On the other hand, the Democratic caucus was historically close, to the point where the attendees had to flip a coin to determine the winner. According to results from the same Wall Street Journal article, former Senator Hillary Clinton won with 701 votes, with Senator Bernie Sanders close behind with just four votes short of that, and the former Governor of Maryland, Martin O’Malley, receiving only eight votes. After the caucus, O’Malley officially ended his presidential campaign. On February 9th, the first primary will be held in Iowa. An important date to all of the readers is the California primary, which take place on June 7th. Primaries are preliminary elections in which both the Democratic and Republican nominees are chosen for each state that uses this system. Furthermore, the general election, which determines who will become the President of the United States; will be held on November 8, 2016. |
