Asian Designers Take Over New York Fashion Week
By Kiera Llanes
As we take a glimpse into New York Fashion Week, we watch out for up and coming designer Peter Do. Do introduced his first collection as creative director of renowned fashion house Helmut Lang. The Helmut Lang brand has been known since the 90’s for its minimalist yet subversive designs; with Peter Do taking over the brand’s latest collection, he reimagines the minimalist aesthetic through a unique, innovative lens. Do is associated with Fast Retailing, the company that founded popular Japanese retail brand Uniqlo. Having already made a name for himself through the establishment of Uniqlo, his debut in New York Fashion Week cemented his place as one of the fashion industry’s rising designers.
Like Peter Do, the brand Sandy Liang turned heads in this year’s New York Fashion Week. 2023 has been Sandy Liang’s year, as the brand continues to contribute greatly to fashion trends, with many other brands following their girlishness and bows. For their latest collection, the brand was inspired by the costuming for Sofia Coppola’s 1999 film “The Virgin Suicides.” The collection showcased the classic Sandy Liang identity, with bows and micro-mini skirts. In this collection, Sandy Liang’s signature look manages to still be distinctive and interesting while keeping the integrity of the brand. With Fashion Week celebrating brands like Peter Do and Sandy Liang, Asian designers continue taking strides towards Asian representation in the fashion industry. |
2023 Olympian Eagles Football Season Preview
By Jacob Marcial
The new school year is now in full swing, and that means the start of a new football season for the Olympian Eagles.
As the new season has gone underway, the Eagles are looking to continue improving on a 4-6 record in 2022, which followed a 0-7 record the year prior. The story of this season is big changes. The team lost 5 All-League players from last season to graduation, and biggest of all, they brought in a new head coach, Brad Carter, from Cerritos High School in Los Angeles. With all these changes, of course, comes a period of adjustment, and the team is hoping to facilitate that process as much as possible.
“It’s been a great experience here, so far. All the kids have been fantastic,” Coach Carter said, and while the season hasn’t gotten off to the start they wanted, the Eagles are still positive that success is coming. “We’re still trying to find our rhythm, offensively, but I am very confident wins are coming.”
Despite the change between this season and last, there is still a sense of familiarity throughout the team. 41 seniors return from last year’s squad, including 7 All-League players from the 2022 season: Safety Ethan Roberts, linebacker Ceejay Clavier, receiver Jake Marcial, lineback Josue Vargas, lineman Matthew Lattimer, lineman Riley Baloy, and linebacker Ethan Mallon. Complimenting the large group of seniors is a pool of underclassmen who have contributed to the team just as much, including quarterbacks Jayden Fuentes and Isaac Powell, receivers Jayden Sandoval, Arnold Mora, and Patricio Flatts, and linemen Aiden Flores, and Aiden McGough.
“For the team, I just want to have a good season, if we can expand on some of the success we found last year… if we can pick it up, especially heading into league, make a run at a league title, that would be great,” said Mallon. “Personally, I just want to not get hurt, that’s what I want to work towards… We have 41 seniors, so if we can make it a good experience, that would be great.”
The Eagles have started 0-2 in their first two games of the season against Westview and Grossmont. The home opener against Westview was tied at 7 going into halftime, with an opening touchdown from Clavier on a rush up the middle, but the offense became stagnant for most of the second half, leading to a final score of 34-14 in the loss. Improvement was shown in week 2 against Grossmont, with the defense forcing four turnovers, including three interceptions from Isiah Grissom, Mallon, and Clavier, who returned his for a touchdown, and a 67-yard touchdown pass from Powell to AJ Cadriel, but ultimately resulted in a hard-fought 44-22 loss. Regardless, the Eagles are determined to bounce back for the rest of the season, win a league championship, and make the playoffs for the first time in 6 years.
