MEXICAN INDEPENDENCEBy Carolina Martinez
In the year 1500, Spain conquered Mexico and named it New Spain. Life was hard under Spanish rule and many of the native Mexicans were forced into slavery. More than 300 years later, on September 16, 1810, a priest named Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla started a revolt against the Spanish. The Spanish were finally defeated in 1821 and now Mexican Independence is celebrated every year to remember the beginning of the struggle for freedom. Every year on September 16th, the people of Mexico celebrate the day that they gained independence as a country. Mexico celebrates its independence with parades, music and fireworks. Brass bands fill the streets and governors reenact "El Grito," or the famous cry for freedom in major government palaces. People set towers of braided willow and palm stalks on fire, exploding fireworks, firecrackers and sparklers loaded inside. And, of course, the celebration wouldn’t be complete without a spread of great food. |

SUMMER NIGHTS By Carolina Martinez
Everyone was invited to the event, and lots of people attended. Some people even invited their friends from other schools to attend the event. All that attended took part in many of the events and showcases that lasted from sunset till dark. Many clubs, teams, and
performance groups were represented throughout the event. This was a chance for them to showcase their talents and abilities for friends and fellow students to enjoy.
Summer Nights started off with musical and dance performances by several groups and students. The OHS Cheer team did a small performance followed by several musical performances by Olympian students. Several students did amazing band performances and solos, and some even performed original songs. Later, the girl’s dance team performed and got the crowd into an energetic mood.
Besides the performances, several clubs had set up booths and stands throughout the
basketball courts. Here, each club sold a different snack or drink for people to buy. To wrap up the event, the ASB hosted an hour long dance party. The DJ’s played several popular songs that people of all ages were getting down to! Some students did the whip, others did the nae nae, and plenty took part of the cha cha slide! The night definitely ended with a beautiful moon and bright smiles from our fellow students.
