Letters with Love

The idea for Letters with Love came to Leianani Aguon, a senior at Olympian, during the beginnings of the spread pandemic. The club, "...wanted a way to communicate with others and hear about their experiences during the pandemic as it varies from place to place."
The club cabinet includes students of the senior class with, Leianani Aguon as president, Sarah Williams as vice president, Roslynn-Mei Sapienza as secretary, and Jericho Vale Cruz as treasurer. Currently, the club is writing letters to health care workers through an organization called Project Honor. However, club president, Leianani Aguon, states, “We aim to meet different individuals by sending letters and messages.” Club members will get a chance to interact with people of different backgrounds and ages. They encourage people to reach out to those who may be in a tougher situation than other such as the elderly, essential workers, and other students. The club allows students a space to write letters to others, who may become their pen pals, especially during this time, where COVID-19 may have taken a huge toll on some. Leianani expresses, “Our goal is to meet new people from all parts of the world and brighten someone’s day with our messages during these difficult times.” A normal meeting, through Google Meet due to circumstances of distance-learning, normally starts off by going over the meeting agenda, then a small ice-breaker to involve other club members and get a conversation starting. The ice-breaker allows the cabinet, club members, and the club advisor to bond and get to know each other better. The cabinet creates an inclusive environment, making sure everyone is comfortable and enjoying their time in the meeting. After the ice-breaker, they then introduce the project they will be working on for that week. Before concluding the meeting, they remind their members of ways they can communicate with the cabinet as well as contact them for updates regarding club matters and future meetings. |
Sarah and Roslynn, two club cabinet members, encourage people to, “Join us in building bonds over pen and paper, making connections from a distance and putting bright and shiny smiles on individuals all over the world.”
Senior, Alana Ames, shares her thoughts on why she joined the club, “I think that this is a good start for me because this was one of the first clubs that I’ve joined and I feel welcomed and comfortable with the people. I like how the leaders decided to make a club about pen pals because I’ve always wanted to have one so it perfectly fits my interest. I also find the leaders to be so welcoming towards the other members like me and I’m looking forward to working with them more.” The club holds their meetings every other Tuesday after school through Google Meet. They post reminders and information on their Google Classroom as well as on their Instagram.
