A Day in Farm Sanctuary, CONTINUED
The March for Our Lives, continued
By Ariana Melchor
The March For Our Lives was a protest put together and led by students on March 24th at Waterfront Park in Downtown San Diego. We all stood in solidarity to demand gun reform. This movement began after 17 lives were lost on February 14th in Florida due to a 19 year old shooter.
“We’re so proud of you!”
“You’re our bright future!”
Those are just two out of the plenty of positive remarks I heard throughout the march from older citizens to the students who were marching. I had never felt more proud of myself for finally standing up for something I believed in. Although I have been on this earth for 18 years, not once in my life had I gone out to a big protest, especially not a dangerous one.
As I stood in the crowd listening to the students speak out, a Trump supporter divided the protesters so he could have a clear path to the very front. He carried two flags, one portraying his support of Trump and the other was the United States flag. I began to question my safety and if being there was truly the best place to be. After a few minutes, people began making their way up to cover the man’s flags with their pride flags, California flag, handmade signs, and stickers. As I witnessed young and old coming together for a positive change, I realized my fear was holding me back. I tightened my grip on my sign and pushed my way to the front to join those who were covering the Trump flag. When I got there, I felt like I was 20 feet tall, although I am only a 5’2” girl. I felt empowered.
The March For Our Lives was truly a life changing experience and it allowed me to see that when plenty of people come together, change can happen.
